Effects of vitamin D on macrophages and myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) hyperinflammatory response in the lungs of COVID-19 patients

Vitamin D regulates homeostasis, anti-microbial response, and inflammation. The vitamin receptors are expressed in the macrophages other immune cells, regulating transcription of many different genes, including those coding peptides. One most severe complications SARS-CoV-2 infection is acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) caused by hyperinflammatory response (commonly called cytokine storm) lung macrophages. Studies showed that deficiency increases severity ARDS COVID-19 infection. We discuss here how supplementation may influence macrophage myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) inflammatory subdue lessen patients.
